David Weigand of San Francisco Chronicle described it as "offbeat and occasionally coarse... the take-away here is that it works". He praised the animation direction by James McDermott for being "fresh, colorful and as wacky as the script", and states that the series possesses "shades of Futurama, South Park and even Beetlejuice", ultimately opining that its humor felt "entirely original".

Rick and Morty is extremelly powerful. As a science fiction verse, it most of the power comes from aliens and advanced technology. Some examples include machines that can create country sized explosions, a living star, weapons that can blow up planets, Massively FTL+ travel speed, higher dimensional beings, technology capable of merging timelines, dream entities, a multiversal statement the devil himself.
When it comes to hax, this verse is also very versatile, some weapons can negate durability, by reducing the opponent to particles, attacking him with anti-matter, making them explode from the inside, etc. Other examples of hax include Size Manipulation powerful enough to shrink humans to the size of ants or make them as big as a country, Dream Manipulation that grants the user the ability to travel through dreams, Summoning of immortal beings, Higher Dimensionality that allows the user to be at multiple timelines at once, instant Time Stop, Curse Manipulation that can be placed on an object, Empathy Manipulation that works like a contagious virus, etc.
