Summary

Godzilla is a movie franchise created by Toho Co. Ltd, with the first film being released in 1954. It is the longest-running film franchise to date, with 29 films created by Toho themselves and 2 American adaptions.

The universe of Godzilla is actually a multiverse, usually all beginning with the original 1954 film. The first two eras of the franchise, the Showa and Heisei eras, are both self-contained universes. With the Millennium series from 1999-2004, the individual films are themselves self-contained and share no continuity with each other, with the exception of Godzilla X Mechagodzilla and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., which are connected.

More recent movies, such as Legendary Pictures' Godzilla and Toho's own recent release, Shin Godzilla, are the first films in the franchise to ignore the original film entirely. The upcoming anime film Godzilla: Monster Planet will also be a part of this multiverse, however whether or not it ignores the original film is currently unknown.

The franchise also has several adaptions outside of films, with comic books, video games, and manga. However, these adaptations do not share continuity with any of the films.

Power of the Verse

The Godzilla verse is surprisingly powerful. While most of the earlier incarnations are around Large Building level to City Block level, stronger, more recent incarnations are City level or higher. Several kaiju in the series also have a number of broken abilities as well.
